Die Enarrationes in Psalmos sind neben seinen Predigten und Briefen Augustinus‘ extensivstes Werk. Über eine Zeitspanne von ca. 30 Jahren entstand im Rahmen von Predigten und persönlichem Studium eine vollständige Auslegung des Psalters. In diesem Werk spiegelt sich Theologie und Schriftverständnis des Augustinus, aber auch sein persönliches Leben – die ersten Auslegungen entstehen noch in der Zeit als Priester, spätere als er schon Bischof von Hippo ist – wohl am deutlichsten wider.
Der Verlag New City Press hat in Kooperation mit dem Augustinian Heritage Institute vor einigen Jahren eine sechsbändige Gesamtausgabe der Enarrationes in englischer Übersetzung herausgegeben (leider gibt es meines Wissens bisher keine vollständige deutsche Übersetzung). In der Einleitung zu der Gesamtausgabe schreibt Michael Fiedrowicz:
As the psalms are a microcosm of the Old Testament, so the Expositions of the Psalms can be treated as a microcosm of Augustinian thought. As in the Book of Psalms are to be found the history of the people of Israel, the theology and spirituality of the Old Covenant, and a treasury of human experience expressed in prayer and poetry, so too does the work of expounding the psalms recapitulate and focus the experiences of Augustin’s personal life, his theological reflections and his pastoral concerns as Bishop of Hippo. (S. 64)
Wertvoller noch als das Studium von Augustinus‘ Denken und Leben selbst, bietet die Psalmenauslegung die Möglichkeit, Christus im Psalter zu studieren. Denn für Augustinus steht Christus im Zentrum der ganzen Schrift, insbesondere aber im Zentrum der Psalmen. Das drückt sich in dem Konzept des totus Christus, des gesamten Christus, aus:
Through understanding the psalms as a prophecy of the mystery of Christ in his totality – of Christ, head and body (the totus Christus) – Augustine had found a hermeneutical key for expounding them, which enabled him to plumb the utmost depths of the Old Testament words and make them immediately available to Christian understanding. […] It is important, though, that Augustine complemented the Christological orientation of his hermeneutical criterion by including the Church, and explained that the Church together with Christ is the central content of holy scripture: ‘Christ and his Church, that total mystery with which all the scriptures are concerned [Augustinus, in Ps. 79,1]’. (S. 43f.)
Die sechs Bände der Expositions of the Psalms können u.a. hier bestellt werden. Wenn sie auch für Privatpersonen (zumindest für Studenten wie mich) nicht gerade erschwinglich sind, werden sie wohl der gemeindeinternen Bibliothek nicht nur gut zu Gesicht stehen, sondern auch dem ein oder anderen Leser den Blick auf unseren Herrn, wie er sich in den Psalmen offenbart, freigeben.
